Wednesday, February 24, 2010 Columbia Festival of the Arts Chooses Winner for K-12 Poster Contest
Although there were many outstanding entries, the Columbia Festival of the Arts has chosen the winner of the K-12 Poster Contest for the 2010 Festival.
The winning entry was created by an eight-year-old third grader at Waterloo Elementary School. The artwork will be unveiled at an event in March and the winner will receive a $500 purchase prize.
"Best of Grade" entries, a Director's Choice and a Juror's Choice were also chosen during the judging process. These students will receive certificates and their artwork will be exhibited during the Festival in June 2010. More

What Columbia Association Support Means To Us
Many people have asked us to comment on the action taken by members of the Columbia Association Board during a budget work session this week.
While we understand and applaud the CA Board's desire to put structured grant application procedures in place, we would hope that due to the timing of the Festival and the dependence that we have on the support we have historically received from CA, that they will elect to fully fund the $95,000 earmarked for the Festival in their original FY10/11 proposed budget. A reduction in funds at this time, when we are so far along in the planning process, will certainly force the Festival to eliminate or significantly cut back on events, particularly the free, 3-day LakeFest weekend that takes place in Columbia Town Center.
The Festival is a vehicle for celebrating the inclusion and community spirit upon which Columbia was founded. For the past 22 years the Columbia Association has recognized, through its support, the very fundamental purpose of the Festival that is inherent in our mission, which is to build community across generations and cultures through shared participation and celebration.

The Importance of the Arts to Maryland’s Tourism Industry
By Nichole Hickey, Executive Director, Columbia Festival of the Arts
According to a survey commissioned by the Maryland State Arts Council, more than 89% of Marylanders acknowledged going to a movie, seeing a live theatre or musical performance, attending an arts festival or visiting an arts gallery during the past year. In fact, according to the survey, three-quarters of Marylanders have encouraged someone they know to pursue their interest in creating or performing arts, and nearly 25% of Marylanders consider themselves to be either active or aspiring artists themselves. Seven in ten people have purchased something handmade by an artist or craftsman. More

Columbia Festival of the Arts: Finale arrives with Barrage of sensations

The 2009 Columbia Festival of the Arts wraps quite literally with a barrage of sound and action when the Canadian world music group Barrage performs next Saturday, June 27 at The Jim Rouse Theatre for the Performing Arts.
Barrage is more than just a musical group that performs music while standing on stage. The nine-member ensemble supplements its playing with demanding physical showmanship, adding high kicks, dance poses and seemingly anything else that moves them while playing.
Their shows have been compared to such aggressively theatrical presentations as "Stomp" and "Riverdance" while being praised for its general musical excellence in countless newspapers and magazines. More

Wilde Lake High girl-made-good set to appear at Columbia Festival of the Arts
Posted 6/04/09
Laura Lippman wants to make this clear -- Wilde Lake High School is not the model for the fictional Glendale High School.
"Glendale is soulless," she says of a major setting in her 2005 crime novel, "To the Power of Three."
Three girls were shot, two fatally, in that girls' bathroom at Glendale High, which Lippman sees as "kind of antithetical to Wilde Lake."
Laura Lippman will read and discuss her work at the 2009 Columbia Festival of the Arts, in partnership with the Howard County Poetry and Literature Society, Tuesday, June 23, 7-9:30 p.m. It will be held in the Rouse Company Foundation Student Services Hall, Room 400, Howard Community College. Tickets are $30.

June will be a bittersweet month for Tina Ramirez, director of Ballet Hispanico. First, she will at long last be able to introduce Howard County dance fans to her award-winning company at the 2009 Columbia Festival of the Arts.
The local date includes a Latin dance workshop that is quickly filling up. On the down side, however, the engagement will also serve to cap a long and successful career as Ramirez heads into retirement.
"I'm thrilled to bring Ballet Hispanico to Columbia," exudes Ramirez by telephone from her New York City office. "We're coming straight from Los Angeles. After the festival, it's a summer break for us, and the rest is uncertain."
Asked if she's looking forward to retirement, she answers with a tinge of melancholy. "My whole life I've been in the arts -- and soon I will be a civilian."
One thing we can count on is a fantastic audience reception for the nearly 40-year-old troupe. In the past, Latin dance programs have proved to be hugely popular with crowds at the Columbia arts festivals.
